News: Flood Protection Measures Planned for the Unstrut River

18. Mar 2026

Flood protection measures are planned along the Unstrut River in northern Thuringia. According to the parties involved, the project is expected to cost around 400 million euros. The German federal government and the state of Thuringia are expected to participate in the financing. The aim of the measures is to improve the management of flooding and to protect affected towns as well as infrastructure.

Among other things, the plans include giving the river more space. This may involve building new dikes, relocating existing ones, and creating additional areas that can hold water during flood events. Construction is currently scheduled to begin in about ten years. The implementation of the different construction phases is expected to take around 30 years.
