News: Insure houses against flooding: It gets expensive in risk areas

In Bavaria, only around one in two homes is currently insured against natural hazards such as flooding - even though more and more homes are located in risk zones. Analyses by the comparison portal Verivox show: For a 150 m² house with a PV system, natural hazard protection costs around €116 per year in “normal” areas - but over €1,900 in high-risk flood zones, i.e. more than 15 times as much.

Consumer advocates, including Sascha Straub from the Bavarian Consumer Advice Center, emphasize: Although such insurance involves an annual premium of “several hundred euros”, it protects against existential loss in the event of an emergency. At the same time, insurers and consumer advocates are calling for a stop to construction in flood areas - otherwise houses may no longer be insurable in the future.

The German government is planning to oblige insurers to proactively offer natural hazard protection for new and existing policies - however, an obligation to take a critical view of this remains voluntary.
