News: Record drought in Germany
23. Apr 2025
Lack of rainfall reaches historic low!
The German Weather Service (DWD) reports an exceptionally dry period in Germany: between the beginning of February and mid-April 2025, there was less precipitation than at any time since records began in 1931. The national average was only around 40 litres of rain per square metre - 68 per cent less than the long-term average. The north-west was particularly affected, with less than 35 per cent of the usual rainfall in some areas.
The picture was similar across large parts of Europe: from the British Isles to Central Europe and the Baltic states, there has been a significant rainfall deficit in recent months. Only in southern Europe, for example in Spain and Portugal, has it been wetter than average.
The rainfall in the last few days has alleviated the drought somewhat, at least regionally.
