HWNG workshop ‘Communicating flood risk – How can local authorities better raise awareness among those affected?’

09. Oct 2025

How can people be effectively made aware of flood risks? This question will be the focus of a workshop on 9 October 2025 in Cologne, hosted by the Rhine Flood Emergency Community (HWNG Rhein) together with its partners.

On 9 October 2025, the Rhine Flood Emergency Community (HWNG Rhein) is organising a workshop in Cologne in collaboration with the Information and Advice Centre for Flood Prevention (IBH), Cologne Municipal Drainage Services (StEB), the German Committee for Disaster Control (DKKV) and the Flood Competence Centre (HKC) entitled ‘Communicating flood risk – How can local authorities better raise awareness among those affected?’

The focus will be on risk communication as the basis for effective personal preparedness. The aim is to discuss how local authorities can provide factual information while at the same time counteracting so-called ‘flood dementia’. Mayors, department heads, heads of hazard prevention and disaster control, and employees of municipal press offices from Rhineland-Palatinate, North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse and the Netherlands are particularly invited to attend.

Participation in the workshop is free of charge, but travel expenses cannot be covered. Registration is required and can be done by emailing ueifler@gstbrp.de.
